Initial Entry Rotary Wing

This web site is designed to assist students attending the IERW (Initial Entry Rotary Wing) program at Ft. Rucker, AL.

Students should be advised that this web site should be used as a study guide rather than a sole source for academic information. Your primary source for the EEF-1 checkride are the references listed in your FTG (Flight Training Guide). Before searching for additional study materials, you should first consult the checkride outline in the FTG. This outline is very specific regarding what categories and subjects will be addressed for each checkride. Finally, check with your instructor pilot to find out which study guides (if any) he/she recommends. Many of the commercially available study guides are out-of-date and contain errors.

Getting Started

IMPORTANT INFORMATION! Internet Explorer 7.0 has security features that block the pop-ups for tutorials on this web site. This site should display fine on any other version of IE or other browsers of choice. I highly recommend Firefox as a brower. Select this link to download Firefox.

This web site is divided into several sections. The material in each section contains summaries of U.S. Army publications and study guides used in Primary Division Checkrides. Each section provides tutorials or information that will help you gauge your knowledge in a particular subject category. Some of the more popular resources are located in the highlight areas below. To view any of the printable documents, you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader. Netscape users are highly encouraged to download the latest version of Internet Explorer since some of the games located on this site are not supported by the Netscape browser.

Electronic Flash Cards for the Video iPod

If you haven't checked out the "Games" section of the web site for a while, you will find two new additions: two sets of flash cards for Chapter 5 of the Operator's Supplement. These two flash card files can be downloaded to your video iPod for portable review. Instructions on how to download the files and get them into iTunes is on the web page where the files are located. It may look daunting at first but you only have to create the folder on your hard drive once to store the files - so don't panic. The files will be stored as a pictures folder in your iPod. The only downside to these files is that they will display in reverse order in your iPod. This is a limitation of the program I'm using. It is easy to overcome this limitation by simply scrolling to the end of the pictures and then viewing them with the back arrow instead of forward. I'll try to remedy this problem sometime in the near future when I get some spare time. To find these files, go to the "Games" page and select the dropdown box. You will see the files at the end of the list.

Subscribe to the Primary Vodcast

In case you aren't familiar with vodcasts and podcasts, vodcasts distribute video and podcasts distribute audio content. If you have the latest version of Internet Explorer, you can subscribe to the vodcast by simply clicking on the RSS button on the vodcast page. If you have a program like iTunes or FireAnt (both free by the way) then you can subscribe to the content on the vlog and dowload it to your MP3 player or iPOD. You can also just watch the videos or listen to the MP3s on the vodcast page but the streaming videos take a while to download. Subscribing prevents long download times and jumpy video. If you own an iPod, you can dock it and when it syncs you will have these tutorials as portable learning content. Then you can listen or watch them when and where you want. If you would like to subscribe (automatically receive new videos and audio files when they are posted), download iTunes or FireAnt (or the aggregator of your choice) and subscribe to the vlog.

To subscribe using iTunes, download the free iTunes player first. From the "Advanced" dropdown menu select "Subscribe to Podcast." A pop-up window will appear. Copy and paste the following red text into the pop-up box and click "OK." http://www.aviationtrainer.com/vlog/?feed=rss2

To subscribe using FireAnt, all you have to do is go to the vlog by selecting the link on this page for the vodcast (upper right corner of page) . When it opens, you will see a FireAnt link in the upper right corner. Select that link and follow the instructions. Don't worry, everything is free.

TH-67 Study Guide This study guide is designed to help you study for your P2 checkride. The study guide is broken down into sections which directly correspond with the P2 checkride outline contained in your FTG. Make sure that you are intimately familiar with each of the references listed in your FTG (both by number and name). The latest edition of this publication is June 2007 and incorporates the 2007 copy of AR 40-8.

TH-67 Engine Start Procedures This is a two page PDF document that outlines the procedures for engine start. This checklist picks up at the item "Engine Start Complete" on the Operator's Checklist. Make sure that you check with your IP to ensure that this start sequence is okay with your IP before you use it. Although the checklist encompasses every item named in Chapter 8, this is my personally desired flow. Therefore, you should check with your IP to see if he/she has any preferences.

Dynamic Rollover (FlightFax Article) This link contains a popular article in FlightFax magazine on Dynamic Rollover. The article covers the characteristics, causes, and contributing factors to dynamic rollover. Caution: This should not be your sole source for dynamic rollover. Make sure you are familiar with the definition and characteristics covered in FM 1-203.

PPC Weight and Balance This documents explains how to compute the weight and balance for a TH-67 on the back of the PPC. You will be required to know how to complete these computations without assistance. This document will explain under what conditions these computations are required and how to compute each individual line.

AR 40-8 Fligth Restrictions (2007) This reference is current as of June 2007. It is the most current copy of AR 40-8. AR 40-8 is the publication for Flight Restrictions due to Exogenous factors. There are significant changes from the earlier dated publication. Make sure you reference this new publication before your checkride.

Logbook Form 2408-12 This is a one page document that demonstrates how to complete the information on the DA Form 2408-12 located in the aircraft logbook. You will be required to complete both the 2408-12 and -13 for your P2 checkride. Make sure you ask your instructor for the ADP Code. This code is unique to every flight and changes with every class.
